Using Employee Assessments Properly

Employee assessment is an important and difficult task for many companies. The biggest problems that many companies have for employee assessment is not knowing what the actual job duties are of the employee. Many assessments for employees will go poorly because the manager will point out a list of faults the employee has in their job duties. But, the employee was not even made clear that they were supposed to do this job from the day they started.

The first step in having effective and productive employee assessments is having a list of job duties that are given to the employee from the day they start at the company. This is usually done in most companies, but it is not done during promotion. Many times when a promotion is given, the employee is expected to know what to do in the job without knowing the list of tasks that are to be performed. For example, if a manager leaves the company and one of the employees under the manager is promoted to manager, they are expected to know how to run the department as the manager without any training or job description. This is the key step in having good employee assessments.

After the employee knows their job duties and descriptions, it is much easier to assess each employee. They know what they are supposed to be doing and how they are supposed to do it, so there is a control that the employee is up against.

When it comes time for the employee assessment, all that must be done is the manager takes out the job description. They can simply go through the job description and grade the employee on each task that is in the description with a number or letter scale.

When the employee comes in for the assessment, the manager can go over the job description. This way, the employee knows exactly where the statements from the manager are coming from. It is also important to highlight what the employee is doing well. Some employee assessments are done completely on what the employee is doing wrong. This lowers the morale of the employee and the next employee assessment will probably be worst than the first one.

Employee assessments can be very good for the company because if they are done right, the employee will know what they need to work on and will try o harder if they assessment is done correctly. This will, in turn, help the company perform more effectively with better working employees.

With employee assessments, it is important that the manager remember that the employee is working hard just as the manager is. If the employee is not working hard and making many mistakes, this can sometimes be a little different and it is sometimes acceptable to give the employee an ultimatum. Although, if this is the case, then the employee will probably not be working with the company much longer anyway because they will either be terminated or quit. That is why employee assessments are so important.
